So, just to address the elephant in the room: we are not gonna labour the point about travel restrictions. The Rolex Sky-Dweller is one of the illest two-time zone with annual calendar watches ever made and, while it might seem like a waste of its talents now with current curbs on air travel, we are confident that the world will properly get back to country-hopping happiness one day and with that, the watch to unleash its full powers.

Until then, the Sky-Dweller’s mighty swag remains very much intact and in full display. Rolex reminds us of this by dropping the Ref. 326238 this year, a new iteration in yellow gold with, for the first time in the Sky-Dweller collection, the Oysterflex bracelet, a comfy strap made from moulding high-tech elastomer over flexible titanium and nickel alloy blades.

Having grown accustomed to seeing the Sky-Dweller in various permutations of gold with matching bracelets, we are chuffed to see a sportier and ‘younger’ offering with the Ref. 326238. The closest watch in spirit to this model would be the Sky-Dweller Ref. 326935 in Everose gold with brown alligator strap from 2012. Even so, the former is a tad dressier, while the new version drips with casual flamboyance; its dynamic yellow gold and Oysterflex combination pairing beautifully with a sunray-finished glossy black dial.

As eye-catching as the Sky-Dweller Ref. 326238 is, the watch’s aesthetics are complementary to its technical finesse. Intelligently designed from the inside-out, the watch is driven by the automatic Calibre 9001, a COSC-certified movement that engages the dual-time and annual calendar features with the case for intuitive ease-of-use. This is manifested by what’s known as the Ring Command bezel. A rotatable, fluted bezel that frames the dial, the Ring Command system lets the user adjust the date, local time or reference time simply by turning it either forwards or backwards.

Meantime, the dial displays the reference time and month with legibility and ingenuity – the former via an off-centred 24-hour disc in the middle, and the latter courtesy of tiny windows at the tips of the 12 baton hour markers, one of which would be in a contrasting colour to indicate which month it is.

Boasting 14 patents, the Sky-Dweller remains the most mechanically complicated timepiece in Rolex’s catalogue – a unique proposition from a brand that prides itself on a timekeeping performance-first ethos. With the Ref. 326238, Rolex has upped the stakes on this by transforming its brainiest creation into a bona fide sex symbol.

He may have scoured the Basel and Geneva watch fairs for the past 15 years, and played an instrumental role to the growth of Singapore's pioneering horological and men's lifestyle publications, but the intrepid scribe seeks to learn something new with each story he writes.
