Fresh from its highly successful Captain Cook Bronze collection last year, Rado is rolling out a new family member from the Captain Cook series, this time in burgundy with matching high-tech ceramic bezel. It’s a well-known fact red hues are one of the hardest colours to produce in ceramic, often coming out too light or uneven. But in the hands of Rado, known for its expertise in ceramics, the burgundy here is flawless.

Yellow gold-toned applied indices provide the perfect complement to the red sunray-brushed dial, while Super-LumiNova on the hands, markers and indices take this firmly into tool watch category while retaining its vintage essence from way back in 1962 when the first Captain Cook was launched.

Beating inside the Captain Cook Bronze Burgundy Automatic is the 11½ Rado Calibre 763, with a very respectable 80 hours of power reserve, which will get you through at least a three-day hike in the great outdoors.

Unlike the previous bronze models that came with leather straps, this version gets a burgundy NATO strap with gold-coloured line down the middle, accentuating its rugged demeanour. In fact, we think this may be the sportiest looking bronze model of the lot and the ideal weekend watch. At S$3,890, it aims not to put too big a dent in your wallet and offer solid value at the same time. Weekend warriors, this one’s just right for you.

Like most people these days, Melissa tells the time with her phone. She considers serious timepieces works of art and thinks the perpetual calendar is the handiest complication to date (pun not intended). She's also a Grammar Nazi but promises not to judge if you can't tell the difference between "guilloche" and "guillotine".
