INTRODUCING: Tudor Pelagos FXD & Pelagos FXD Chrono ‘Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition’
Tudor celebrates its Alinghi Red Bull Racing partnership with a pair of extremely well-built tickers.
When Tudor announced its long-term partnership with Alinghi Red Bull Racing last year, it marked the Manufacture’s first foray into yacht racing, and in the highly competitive America’s Cup, no less. One needn’t be clairvoyant then to foresee commemorative timepieces marking this collaboration will soon follow. However, we must admit that we are pleasantly surprised by how the newly released pair of Pelagos FXD ‘Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition’ models embody the DNA of both entities in extremely robust packages.
Inheriting the winsome form factor of the Pelagos FXD (created in collaboration with a specialist unit of the French Navy in 2021), the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition models come as the time-only Pelagos FXD (Ref. 25707KN) or Pelagos FXD Chrono (Ref. 25807KN), both with extra sturdy fixed (hence its name) strap bars to withstand the rigours of yacht racing. Equipped with a one-piece fabric strap that matches the shade of the matte dial, which in turn is in the same “Team Blue” as the hull of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing AC75, the former has a case size of 42mm, while the latter comes in at 43mm. A dash of red accents on the dial and strap also evokes the red stripes on the vessel’s sides.
Beyond colour matching, the two watches remarkably have more in common with the team’s hydrofoil racing yacht. Just as the Alinghi Red Bull Racing AC75 is a feat in cutting-edge maritime engineering with its proprietary blend of carbon fibre, titanium, and stainless steel, the Pelagos FXD Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition watches are extremely well-built with cases and bezel inserts in a high-tech carbon composite (a first for the brand), bi-directional rotatable bezels and crowns in titanium, and stainless steel casebacks engraved with team’s logo ensuring 200m water resistance. To enhance the watches’ legibility, the hands and indexes are coated with Swiss Super-LumiNova Grade X1, which performs up to 60 per cent better than standard lumes after two hours.
Equally impressive are the engines driving the watches, both in-house movements boasting COSC certification, a non-magnetic silicon balance spring, and a 70-hour power reserve. Featuring the signature look of Tudor’s manufacture calibres, the self-winding MT5602 driving the Pelagos FXD has an open-worked tungsten winding rotor and surfaces with alternate sand-blasted and polished finishing in addition to laser decorations. The Pelagos FXD Chrono’s automatic MT5813 movement is similarly finished. Derived from the Breitling B01 chronograph calibre, it is a result of a lasting collaboration between the two brands, with a high-precision regulating organ developed by Tudor as well as a column wheel mechanism and vertical clutch.
On paper, the Pelagos FXD Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition models are a pair of well-specced value propositions that should appeal to not just Tudor diehards and Alinghi Red Bull Racing fans, with the Pelagos FXD priced at S$5,130 and the Pelagos FXD Chrono at S$7,080. More importantly, they wear like a dream IRL with a lightweight yet hardwearing carbon composite case and a fabric strap with a self-gripping fastening system offering optimum wrist comfort. We highly recommend heading to an authorised retailer to experience the watches yourself.
