The PRX watch that many collectors have been waiting for is here.

Tissot’s PRX has been an incredible success for the company since its release in 2020. In fact, Tissot casually mentioned during its online novelties presentation earlier this year that the collection today makes up nearly half of the brand’s sales. It has not only revived an integrated bracelet icon and made it accessible but also brought about a quartz renaissance to some extent.

The PRX comes in three sizes: 42mm (for the chronographs), 40mm, and 35mm. Until last year, mechanical movements were limited to larger-sized cases. Late last year, the brand introduced a 35mm steel model with gold bezel and diamond indexes, and since then, we’ve been expecting the full-steel 35mm automatic watch to be released. In fact, we’ve known about the PRX Powermatic 80 35mm for several months now; it’s been a hard secret to keep.

Same but different

These four models feature a waffle-patterned dial with sunray brushing, similar to the larger 40mm watches with automatic movements. The brass dials are stamped and electroplated in colours of deep green, midnight blue, and black. The watches all feature steel cases with polished and satin-brushed finishing, with sapphire crystal on both sides of the case. The watches are powered by Tissot’s Powermatic 80 calibre, identical to the earlier PRX automatic watches, with an 80-hour power reserve and Nivachron hairspring.

What’s interesting about the fourth PRX Powermatic 80 35mm is that it comes with a mother-of-pearl dial with the same waffle pattern that’s etched and engraved, as the material is too fragile to be stamped. This is unique as it uses a material typically seen on ladies’ watches, transforming it into a rather unisex watch. (Confession: we’ve ordered one for ourselves.) The iridescence of the mother-of-pearl material is made even more subtle thanks to the waffle pattern that’s etched on it, making it look almost like an opaline dial rather than the mother-of-pearl it actually is.

The mother-of-pearl model is exclusive to the 35mm case size and blazes a new step in terms of unisex design. In many ways, the 35mm size, while small, looks and feels more natural in terms of its design aesthetic and is an excellent fit on small and medium-sized wrists, thanks to the short, angled lugs that are directly connected to the single link bracelet with folding clasp.

The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 35mm is priced at S$990 for the green, blue, and black dials. That’s just S$50 less than that of the 40mm. The mother-of-pearl reference is just S$90 more at S$1,080. The watches will be available at all authorised retailers from July 2023 onwards. Go try it on yourself, and let us know if you like them as much as we do.
