INTRODUCING: TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Year of the Dragon

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Year of the Dragon Limited Edition.

Along with its new ambassador, Liu Haoran, TAG Heuer is celebrating the mythical zodiac creature with a special edition.

For many who celebrate the Lunar New Year’s cultures and traditions, changes should take place ahead of the following year so that everything is refreshed. This is absolutely true for TAG Heuer. The brand announced Julien Tornare of Zenith as its new CEO, with outgoing CEO Frédéric Arnault (the second youngest son of Bernard Arnault) becoming the CEO of LVMH Watches – a new role that separates the fine and high jewellery brands of the company from the watch-centric businesses. Frédéric Arnault will report to Stéphane Bianchi, who oversees both segments. And Zenith will welcome a new CEO, Benoit de Clerck, who comes from Panerai and previously held a role in IWC as well.

But that’s not all. TAG Heuer has also kicked off the year with a new brand ambassador, who is none other than Chinese actor Liu Haoran. A graduate of the renowned Beijing Dance Academy, he broke into the Chinese movie industry with Beijing Love Story. Subsequently, he earned himself a spot at the Central Academy of Drama with the top score for the entrance exam. Liu has starred in highly successful films, from the popular Detective Chinatown series to Chen Kaige’s much-lauded My People, My Country. Liu is a triple threat in the entertainment industry, with singing, dance, and acting accolades under his belt.

The first campaign Liu stars in for the Swiss watchmaker features a timepiece as extraordinary as the actor. The watch is TAG Heuer’s tribute to the coming Year of the Dragon and is available in two limited edition models in stainless steel and rose gold. Where most watch brands tend to put the dragon motif front and centre to highlight the association with the zodiac animal, TAG Heuer has thoughtfully refrained, with just celebratory red accents on the counters and hour indexes and a Chinese calligraphy writing of the word ‘Dragon’ as part of the small seconds display.

The design of the dial adopts elements from some important Carrera references, such as the 2447 T’s minute track, piston pushers, and angular lugs, and a three-counter display that mimics the Jack Heuer Birthday Gold Limited Edition, with its “invisible” running seconds counter, with just compass bar markings indicating the quarters. In this limited edition, there are only two bars on the sides, with the ‘Dragon’ character representing ‘60’. The dials are in brushed silver for the steel model and rose gold to match the gold version.

The exhibition caseback is where TAG Heuer has added the dragon motif, encircling the crystal and floating above the oscillating weight. The design of the dragon, outlined in gold with black scales, offers a unique view of the chronograph watch from the back. The Heuer 02 calibre is a TAG Heuer standard that runs at 4Hz with a vertical clutch and column-wheel chronograph control, and a power reserve of 80 hours. The watches come in matching red alligator leather straps, with a folding clasp for the steel model and a pin buckle for the rose gold one.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Year of the Dragon is limited to 300 pieces in steel (S$9,000) and 50 in rose gold (S$32,050). Shipping details for the watches will be provided later, as they’re currently unavailable in Singapore. However, you can still head down to a TAG Heuer boutique to try it on before deciding.
