INTRODUCING: Parmigiani’s new Tonda PF Sport models

Replacing the Tonda GT, the new line’s sport-chic aesthetics are matched by its technical excellence.

Launched in 2021, Parmigiani’s supremely elegant Tonda PF collection is the brainchild of CEO Guido Terreni, marking the storied Maison’s aim to vie for a place in the highly competitive luxury sports watch segment. This year, the precursor of the Tonda PF – the Tonda GT – is given a makeover, resulting in the new Tonda PF Sport that melds sporty chic with sartorial sophistication.

Available in steel or 18K pink gold, the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph and Sport Automatic have been designed as active counterparts to their classical siblings, which include flying tourbillon, GMT rattrapante, annual calendar, and time-and-date references. The two models come in 41mm (Automatic) and 42mm (Chronograph) cases and are designed to be highly wearable both on a bare wrist or under a shirt cuff. While their lineage within the Tonda PF collection is immediately evident, the new timepieces are distinguished by several subtle details.

For example, the knurled bezel bears 160 incisions, compared to 225 on the regular Tonda PF models. The crown is slightly larger for better grip, while the collection’s signature grain d’orge hand-guilloché decoration on the dial is replaced with a clou triangulaire guilloché pattern. In keeping with the Tonda PF’s discreet luxury aesthetic, the ‘PF’ medallion at 12 o’clock and the date window (at 6 o’clock on the Automatic and 4.30 on the Chronograph) are modestly sized.

The watches are designed for everyday use, so legibility and comfort are clearly major considerations in their design. In particular, the ‘panda’ styling of the Chronograph – black sub-dials on a white background – further enhances the readability of key information, accentuated with black SuperLumi-Nova on the indexes. Of special note is the handcrafted Cordura-treated rubber straps that seamlessly adjoin the lugs, giving the impression of being integrated into the case. Both models are water resistant to 100m.

The Tonda PF Sport Chronograph is fitted with the in-house Calibre PF070, a high-frequency 5Hz (36,000 vph) self-winding integrated chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. It is COSC-certified for precision and offers a power reserve of 65 hours. Meanwhile, the Tonda PF Sport Automatic features the Calibre PF770. With a double barrel providing a power reserve of 60 hours, it beats at a slightly lower frequency of 4Hz (28,800 vph). Visible through sapphire casebacks, both manufacture movements are beautifully hand-finished with bevelled edges and Côtes de Genève decoration and feature the Maison’s signature skeletonised winding rotor in 22-carat pink gold.
