The Orient Mako 20th Anniversary Limited Edition (Ref. RA-AA0822L) has a 41.8mm stainless steel case and matching bracelet.

Interestingly, the accessible dive-ready watch wasn’t named Mako when it was launched in 2004. Rather, it earned the nickname (a sure sign of its popularity) when customers mistook the dolphin icon on the caseback for a shark and referred to it as the Mako, after the Maori word for it. Orient eventually adopted this term of endearment, though the series’ official name remains “Diver design models”, as the brand candidly admits they are not ISO standard diver’s watches. That said, the Mako maintains a respectable water resistance of 200m, and its bold Arabic numerals, indexes, and hands are filled with the brand’s Luminous Light lume for enhanced legibility, so the watch is more than sufficient for the casual diving enthusiast.

The ocean-inspired dial has a stamped wave pattern, blue gradation, and an “Anniversary Edition” inscription that aligns with the 20-minute mark, where the two-toned bezel’s blue and black colours separate.

Besides the dolphin-adorned solid caseback and water-resistant rating, the Ref. RA-AA0822L also retains the collection’s unidirectional rotating bezel with six grooves, this time with a two-toned aluminium insert. Notably, the blue and black colours separate at the 20-minute mark for the occasion, lining up with the “Anniversary Edition” inscription on the minute track encircling the dial. Speaking of which, the watch’s gorgeous mien is inspired by the ocean surrounding Japan with a stamped wave pattern and a blue gradation subtly transitioning to its darkest at 6 o’clock. Meanwhile, the hands are coloured gold to represent the sun’s rays reflecting on the ocean and highlight the celebratory spirit of the anniversary model.

The screw-down caseback bears the collection’s dolphin emblem alongside a commemorative 20th-anniversary engraving.

Encased in the Mako 20th Anniversary Limited Edition’s 41.8mm stainless steel frame is the in-house Calibre F6922 with a 40-hour power reserve. First introduced in the Mako II and the Ray II models in 2016, the self-winding calibre succeeded the revered 46943 movement, which was fitted in Orient watches for over four decades. Although the F6922 still beats at a frequency of 21,600vph, it trumps its predecessor in terms of its accuracy (+25 seconds to –15 seconds per day), as well as the added hacking and manual-winding functions.
