Norqain Introduces New Pastel Dial Colours to the Vintage Freedom 60 Chrono 40mm

Norqain Vintage Freedom 60 Chrono 40mm

The independent watchmaker’s best-selling chronograph evokes la dolce vita of the Italian Mediterranean.

Watches and Wonders Geneva is less than a week away, and Norqain has already fired its first salvo, and unsurprisingly so. Founded only in 2018, the fully independent, family-owned Swiss watch company has pretty much marched to the beat of its own drum since its inception, rolling out covetable timepieces – including the Adventure Neverest GMT and Independence Wild One – with the confidence of a seasoned player, thanks in no small part to its team comprising industry veterans and youthful entrepreneurs. Just in time for spring/summer and purportedly inspired by la dolce vita, its popular line of Vintage Freedom 60 Chrono is updated with au courant dial colours – Sky Blue, Pistachio, and Peach.

The new Norqain Vintage Freedom 60 Chrono models hit the sweet spot with their 40mm case that fits most wrists.

Introduced in 2020, the Vintage Freedom 60 Chrono was intended to appeal to a broad multi-generational audience and is one of Norqain’s best sellers. As its name suggests, it borrows heavily from the aesthetics of vintage chronographs but not without contemporary flourishes. This is perhaps where the watchmaker potentially misstepped, initially launching it as a 43mm model, which seems incongruous with its retro styling. Thankfully, Norqain was quick to course correct, resizing the watch to a more sensible 40mm in 2022, which is a nice compromise between the old and new.

Of course, the trio of new references continue to sport the 40mm case and the collection’s winsome design elements. The piston pushers and box-type sapphire crystal are redolent of the golden age of the chronograph, and the 316L stainless steel case is exceptionally well-finished with polished surfaces juxtaposing vertical brushed accents. On the left side of the case, one can find a steel plate secured by two screws that can be engraved with a personal message. Our one niggle here is its 14.90mm height, which is relatively thick, but that is certainly not a deal breaker.

The Norqain Vintage Freedom 60 Chrono 40mm Peach is limited to 300 pieces.

Among the three new variants, brand loyalists might find the Sky Blue (S$6,600) version a tad familiar, as it bears an uncanny resemblance to last year’s Ice Blue limited edition that has since sold out. However, the former sets itself apart with dark blue sub-dials and tachymeter ring instead of black coloured ones on its predecessor, as well as its Pistachio (S$6,600) and Peach (S$6,750) counterparts. The latter is the most enticing of the lot, in our humble opinion, as it is limited to 300 pieces and sports a beautiful rendition of Peach Fuzz, the Pantone Colour of the Year.

Water-resistant to 100m, thanks in part to a screw-down crown, the Vintage Freedom 60 Chrono 40mm is equipped with the self-winding Calibre N19, which is based on the Sellita SW510. The cam-operated chronograph movement beats at a frequency of 4Hz and has a respectable power reserve of 62 hours. In addition to the matching steel bracelets, the watches can also be paired with animal cruelty-free straps in either black Perlon rubber or grey or ivory NORTIDE linen straps made using upcycled ocean-bound plastic produced with #tide.
