INTRODUCING: Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar In Pink Gold With Black Dial

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar

Jaeger-LeCoultre gives the oft-overlooked modern classic an eye-catching update.

Perhaps overshadowed by the illustrious Reverso, the Master Control is one of the more underappreciated collections in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s repertoire. Embodying timeless style and mechanical sophistication, the watches that are endowed with fresh interpretations of practical and iconic complications, and the Master Control Chronograph Calendar has been scoring high in our books since its 2020 launch in stainless steel and 18K pink gold, both with silvered grey, sunray-brushed dial. However, we reckon its latest version should earn it more admirers with its stylish black dial and red accents.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar was launched in 2020 with a silvered grey dial in stainless steel or 18K pink gold.

A relatively new collection for the Grande Maison, the Master Control was introduced in 1992, positioned at the intersection of tradition and modernity. Taking cues from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s emblematic round watches from the mid-20th century, such as the Memovox, Futurematic, and PowerMatic, its case is updated to contemporary dimensions, with clean lines and beautiful proportions framing elegantly appointed dials. Yet, it was also the first collection to undergo the watchmaker’s stringent 1,000-Hour Control Certification testing protocol – not just of the movement, but of the cased-up watch – which is how it earned its name.

The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar’s 40mm pink gold case exudes a relaxed and understated elegance.

Exuding a relaxed and understated elegance, the 40mm case of the Master Control Chronograph Calendar is crafted in 18K pink gold, featuring an outwardly sloping bezel and curved lugs for a more dynamic look. The polished bezel, crowns, and lug bevels perfectly complement satin-brushed case sides and lugs, while rectangular chronograph pushers and a black alligator leather strap enhance the assertive allure of the sleek 12.05mm thick case.

That said, the true highlight here is the black sunray-brushed dial that hosts a wealth of information. Encircling the chronograph and calendar displays is a pulsometric scale in red (traditionally developed for physicians to measure heart rates), providing an intriguing counterpoint to the sober backdrop. The fiery hue also appears on the three sub-dials and day/month windows, catching one’s attention.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar’s eye-catching dial has a layout that is straightforward and intuitive.

The indications for the complete calendar and chronograph complications are straightforward and intuitive, with a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The upper section of the dial showcases the day and month windows, while a circular moon-phase and date indicator resides at 6 o’clock. To improve legibility, the watch is fitted with Dauphine hands and applied trapezoidal indexes in the same pink gold tone as its case.

The watch’s in-house self-winding Calibre 759 is showcased by a sapphire crystal caseback.

Underneath this gorgeous mien beats the in-house self-winding Calibre 759, an integrated chronograph movement boasting a 65-hour power reserve, a column-wheel chronograph mechanism with a vertical clutch, and a triple calendar with moonphase module. Featuring exquisite finishing and intricate details, including Côtes de Genève decoration, blued screws, and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s iconic open-worked gold rotor adorned with the signature ‘JL’ motif, the movement can be seen via a sapphire crystal caseback, anchored by a back bezel with bas-relief engravings.

With the same retail price of S$46,600 as the rose gold/silvered grey dialled version, we think the new Master Control Chronograph Calendar is a more attractive option, with its resolutely contemporary black dial providing a cool contrast to the warmth of its precious metal case. But that’s just our opinion, and we recommend experiencing the watches in person to decide which version you genuinely prefer.
