Watch Of The Day: IWC Da Vinci AutomaticWritten by Joshua Yap
Your one-minute primer to the IWC Da Vinci Automatic.
Although IWC proposes this as a unisex model, we reckon that its 40mm case size may not be too kind on most feminine wrists. However, it is the ideal size for a masculine dress watch.
In stainless steel with a matching bracelet or black alligator leather strap, it is a faithful representation of the 1980s Da Vinci models and possesses the essential design codes of the refreshed collection. A rounded bezel encircles a silver-plated or slate-coloured dial, bookended by the signature articulated lugs that ensure a snug fit. The only let-down is perhaps the absence of a see-through case back to show off its automatic movement.
Though he wasn’t inducted into the world of watch journalism by choice, Joshua was hooked by mechanical horological wonders in no time. Although he personally favours modestly sized, no-nonsense timepieces, he sometimes misses the outrageous mind-bogglers of the pre-Credit Crunch years. As he dreams of owning a modern haute horlogerie watch one day, he’s currently content scouring the Internet for vintage value buys.
