IWC introduces a new Mark XX for the 75th anniversary of the Mark 11

The new dial joins the Pilot's Watch Mark XX family.

Back in 1948, IWC responded to a British Ministry of Defence request to build a robust timepiece suitable for astronavigation purposes that would enable pilots to figure out their exact locations in a pre-radar world. The watch had to be highly magnetic resistant, waterproof, and shockproof, with a hacking sweep seconds hand for precise time-setting. It became an incredible success. Known as the navigator’s wristwatch, its production continued for 36 years, and its audience expanded to include civilians.

The Mark 11 has seen steady evolutions and developments over time, and in 2022, IWC introduced the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX. The watch has a 40mm stainless steel case that has been improved with a new side profile and short curved lugs designed to fit better on wrists. The watch is available with a five-link bracelet with brushed and polished finishes (Ref. IW328208) or a calf leather strap (Ref. IW328207). They both feature the EasX-CHANGE system that lets you swap them out without needing a strap tool.

The diamond jubilee references feature silver-plated dials with Arabic numerals and a minute track in black. The quarters feature lumed bar and arrow indexes with a date window at 3 o’clock. The silvered dials give the watches a vintage feel recalling the style and elegance of the ’40s and ’50s. The watches still have a soft iron inner case, just like the original.

The two models join IWC’s existing Mark XX timepieces with blue, green, and black dials. They are powered by the brand’s reliable Calibre 32111, an in-house base with 4Hz silicon escapement and 120 hours of power reserve, thanks to IWC’s highly efficient double pawl winding system. The closed caseback features an engraving of a vintage military plane.

The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX is available on IWC’s website and in boutiques with a six-year extension to the standard two-year warranty. They are not limited editions but certainly exclusive and priced at S$9,600 inclusive of tax. Head to the nearest store to check it out now.
