Watch Of The Day: Hermès Cape Cod TGM BicoloreWritten by Joshua Yap
Your one-minute primer to the Hermès Cape Cod TGM Bicolore.
When Hermès's famed artistic director, Henri d'Origny, design the Cape Cod in 1991, he probably didn't anticipate the watch would go on to become the icon it is today. Inspired by the maison's Chaîne d'Ancre motif, he famously defied the brief given to him to create a square-shaped watch and made a "square-within-rectangle" timepiece instead. The steel très grand modèle (TGM) models released recently give us more to love about the distinctive ticker, especially the version with bi-colour calfskin strap, which is expertly hand-crafted and finished in the Hermès ateliers.
Though he wasn’t inducted into the world of watch journalism by choice, Joshua was hooked by mechanical horological wonders in no time. Although he personally favours modestly sized, no-nonsense timepieces, he sometimes misses the outrageous mind-bogglers of the pre-Credit Crunch years. As he dreams of owning a modern haute horlogerie watch one day, he’s currently content scouring the Internet for vintage value buys.
