INTRODUCING: Franck Muller Vanguard Slim Skeleton
A new skeleton movement construction brings a different style to the robust Vanguard.
Franck Muller has, since the brand’s founding, developed and redeveloped the classic tonneau case in various ways. In the early days, this was the Cintrée Curvex, which later gave way to the sportier, more powerful design of the Vanguard case in 2013.
A decade later, the Vanguard continues to be a Franck Muller bestseller, especially as smaller case sizes with bold new designs have emerged in recent years, thanks to its Southeast Asian distributor, Cortina Watch. The Vanguard has adapted quickly to evolving watch trends, the latest of which is the slimmed-down and ultra-luxe sports watch. The Vanguard Slim Skeleton offers high jewellery in a sports watch design with a brand-new skeleton movement driving it.
The highlight of this watch is Franck Muller’s MVT FM 708-SQ, an ultra-thin and self-winding movement designed in a new and fluid movement construction. The soft curves of the bridges are inspired by organic structures, with a minimalist design that exposes as much of the watch interior as possible. Where past Franck Muller skeleton movements reminded us of Le Corbusier’s architecture, this movement feels more like a Zaha Hadid creation.
The ultra-thin movement measures just 4.15mm thick with a full-sized skeleton rotor, keeping this Vanguard model to a svelte 9.1mm thick. It’s really compact at just 35mm across and offers a 38-hour power reserve. The movement is carefully finished by hand, with chamfering on the mainplate and bridges as well as diamond polishing on the sinks. The mainplate, bridge, and wheels are satin-brushed.
The watch has retained all of its character, with fully curved sides on a very easy-to-wear 37mm long case middle (the lug-to-lug length is just over 45mm) or a larger 41mm long case (the lug-to-lug is just under 50mm in this version). And to highlight the ultra-luxe athleisure style of this watch, it’s also fully set with 439 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 4.04 carats, with another 152 on the Arabic numeral hour indexes that are attached to the inner bezel and float above the skeleton movement.
The watch comes in white gold or rose gold, with two size options for a total of six models. The white gold versions are available in royal blue or deep black. They are paired with matching alligator straps that have rubberised undersides on a diamond-set buckle. Ever the celebrant of opposing qualities, Franck Muller has taken a classic movement, fitted it on a sports model, and decked it out with diamonds. The Vanguard Slim Skeleton bridges high jewellery with sports luxe, a fun mix if we say so ourselves.
