INTRODUCING: Franck Muller Year of the Dragon Watches

Franck Muller Vanguard Dragon Slim Skeleton

The watchmaking virtuoso marks the Lunar New Year the best way it knows how – by subverting expectations.

Besides being lauded as the Master of Complications, Franck Muller has also been the enfant terrible of luxury watchmaking for over three decades, with its unique offerings that are audacious, playful, and sometimes provocative. Hence, when it comes to watches marking the Lunar New Year, one wouldn’t expect the brand to stick to the well-beaten path. True to form, the Genevan watchmaker has created a quartet of tickers that are quite unlike any of the Year of the Dragon releases we’ve covered so far. In fact, references to the zodiac animal on these watches are not immediately apparent to the uninformed, making them choice wrist companions for this festive period and beyond.

Following the resounding success of 2023’s #FR2NCK MULLER Vanguard, a joint effort with streetwear brand #FR2 celebrating the Year of the Rabbit, Frank Muller found another Japanese partner to collaborate with this year. A rising millennial artist, Ryoko Kaneta is best known for her unique, dreamy aesthetic that presents various aspects of nature via anthropomorphic beings, which is rooted in traditional Japanese philosophies such as Shinto. Here, the artist has whimsically reimagined the mythical dragon as a series of doll-like girls, each interacting playfully with an hour numeral on the dial.

Ryoko Kaneta reimagines the dragon as a series of anthropomorphised doll-like girls, each interacting playfully with an hour marker.

Drawing on traditional East Asian beliefs that honour the dragon as a divine entity bestowing rain for fruitful harvests, Kaneta gave the chibi-style dial figures aqua blue accents. Further nods to the water element include the turquoise-coloured dial, the ripple-like guilloché pattern emanating from the centre, and a matching alligator strap. The watch is presented in the iconic Cintrée Curvex case (45mm x 32mm in stainless steel), fitted with the self-winding MVT FM 2536-SC movement with a power reserve of 42 hours. Limited to 500 pieces, the Cintrée Curvex Ryoko Kaneta Dragon Limited Edition is an Asia-Pacific exclusive retailing at S$18,000.

Vanguard Dragon Slim Skeleton Limited Edition

A trio of Vanguard Slim Skeleton models add a touch of sporty glamour to the festive proceedings. The well-received collection was launched late last year, and here, much of its winsome features are retained, most notably its open-worked calibre that was specially developed for the svelte watch. Framed by a white gold case fully paved in brilliant-cut diamonds, all the components are on display, meticulously manufactured and hand-decorated in-house, highlighting the brilliant architecture of the self-winding movement.

The engraved guardian dragon is visible via the watch’s tinted or transparent sapphire crystal caseback.

The Vanguard Dragon Slim Skeleton comes in three variants – Rouge, Vert, and Color Dreams. The first two flaunt pops of red and green, respectively, courtesy of their infilled hands and tinted sapphire casebacks, and the brand’s iconic Arabic numerals are hand-set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The third reference, however, is quintessential Franck Muller with a mélange of cheery colours lighting up its hour markers against a clear sapphire crystal caseback. Speaking of which, this is where the dragon finally makes its appearance, engraved on a customised winding rotor, seemingly protecting the movement like a mystical guardian. Limited to 10 pieces each, the watch is available exclusively at Franck Muller boutiques in the Asia Pacific region, with prices available upon request.
