A history-making Breitling watch up for grabs.

Limited to 500 pieces, the watch will have the honour of being on the world’s oldest airplane to circumnavigate the globe. Come September 2017, the watch would have flown onboard the 77-year-old Breitling Douglas DC-3 to 28 countries and 55 cities in just a span of six months.

Aviation enthusiasts will be familiar with the Douglas DC-3. An aircraft that kick-started the era of commercial aviation, it was introduced in 1940 and was famous for cutting coast-to-coast flight times in the United States from 25 to 18 hours, with the capacity to carry more passengers than any other previous aircraft. Although more than 16,000 DC-3s were built, only a few hundred are said to still be flying worldwide, one of them owned by Breitling.

But back to the watch. Given its indelible history in the world of aviation – launched in 1952, the Navitimer is the official watch of the Aircraft Pilots and Owners Association (APOA), and has never ceased production since its debut – it is a no-brainer that this model was chosen to accompany the Douglas DC-3 on its historic flight.

A statement-maker housed in a 46mm steel case, the Navitimer 01 DC-3 Limited Edition boasts all the attributes you’d expect from the iconic chronograph. The knurled bezel, the circular slide rule, the contrasting chronograph sub-dials and no-nonsense legibility are signature hallmarks that are well-accounted for. The timepiece feels hefty on the wrist, and appropriately so, lending the Navitimer its unmistakable tool-watch allure.

Although powered by Breitling’s in-house automatic Calibre B01, a workhorse movement offering 70 hours of power reserve, the watch’s biggest draw has to be its caseback, which is engraved with the likeness of the history-making plane and details of the record-breaking feat.
