Breguet Marine Collection 2020: Singapore Price And Review

Breguet heads out to sea with panache.
Since Gerald Genta birthed the concept of the luxury sports watch way back in 1972 with the Royal Oak, it’s been a category that has enjoyed a tremendous following (even though it was met with hesitation at the start) amongst watch aficionados. Today, almost every major watch brand has a sports luxe offering and it’s usually a top-seller.
What exactly, though, would one consider a luxury sports watch? We defined it here as “sleeker and hardier than a dress watch, yet prettier than a tool watch.” Based on Genta’s creation, though, the OG was sheathed in steel and equipped with a bracelet.

Often, the bracelet is what defines a sporty aesthetic; especially so in countries like ours where the humid climes make leather or rubber straps less comfortable during outdoor activities. And while steel was (and still is) a popular material for luxury sports watches, precious materials like titanium and gold have since become par for the course, often enlisted to further elevate a collection's opulence amid the athleticism.

This year, Breguet plays to the sports luxe theme and refreshes its Marine collection with gold bracelets following the combination of leather or rubber straps for the past few years. Two versions are available in this new aesthetic—a silver dial option with rose gold bracelet, and a blue dial variation with white gold bracelet. Both the lugs and first link of the bracelet are integrated to the case, while the links feature brushed surfaces with polished edges.

The wave pattern and Roman numerals on the dial remain, as do the fluted caseband, Breguet ‘pomme’ hands and ‘B’ at the tip of the seconds hand, representing both a maritime flag and the brand’s initial. Carrying on the maritime theme are subtle details in the movement. From the ship’s wheel rotor (below) to the bridges finished to resemble a ship’s deck, the Marine collection stays true to its name. Lume-tipped hands and five-minute markers provide legibility at night.
While Breguet plays more in the dress and technical watch categories, the new bracelet options in the Marine 5517, Marine Chronographe 5527 and Marine Alarme Musicale 5547 bulk up its sporty options and open it up to a wider range of watch lovers. For sure, outdoorsy sorts would lean towards the Type XX models but those that want something equally office- and weekend-appropriate now have something more to choose from.
