INTRODUCING: Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Quantieme Complet Phases de Lune (Ref. 5054-0140-01S)

The iconic diver with complete calendar and moonphase gets a makeover in high-tech ceramic while the brand debuts a new bracelet.

Blancpain has been all about the Fifty Fathoms last year, celebrating the archetypal modern dive watch’s 70th anniversary. And we’ve enjoyed every moment of it, covering the three Acts of the commemorative releases, here, here, and here, not to mention the unexpected collaboration with Swatch last September. But as much as we were admiring the various iterations of the Fifty Fathoms, we were also hoping for a surprise drop of its civilian spin-off – the Bathyscaphe – that, alas, didn’t materialise until now. Although it’s about six months late, we think it’s well worth the wait as the new Quantième Complet Phases de Lune gets an all-ceramic facelift alongside the brand’s first ceramic bracelet.

Created in 1956 as a dive watch that is just as suited for daily wear, the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe’s streamlined design and smaller dimensions make it an attractive option for diving hobbyists and desk divers alike, as it retains key features of the OG, such as optimal underwater visibility with a luminescent display, excellent water resistance, and a rotating bezel for tracking dive times. Since its revival in 2013 as a simple time-and-date model, the Bathyscaphe has embraced additional complications, including annual calendar and flyback chronograph, as well as various materials ranging from precious 18K red gold to robust grade 23 titanium.

The Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet Phases de Lune (Ref. 5054-0140-01S) features Blancpain’s first ceramic bracelet, meticulously crafted and finished by hand by the brand’s in-house experts.

Ceramic was first introduced to the Bathyscaphe as a case material in 2014’s Chronographe Flyback Ocean Commitment before being adopted for regular production models in 2016. Durable, highly scratch-resistant, and hypoallergenic with a hardness nearly five times greater than stainless steel while being 25% lighter, it is especially suited for the refined diver, and the new Quantième Complet Phases de Lune extends its utility to the entire bracelet. This is no mean feat, considering its intricate manufacturing process, particularly in finishing. Leveraging Blancpain’s haute horlogerie expertise, each link is meticulously crafted and satin-finished by hand by the Manufacture’s in-house experts. Meanwhile, the bracelet’s optimal ergonomics are ensured by a patented mounting system, with the links securely held together by cam-shaped pins, offering remarkable durability and exceptional comfort.

The watch’s gradient blue dial pairs exceptionally well with the black ceramic case and bracelet.

The Quantième Complet Phases de Lune is not new to the Bathyscaphe per se, having been a part of the collection since 2018, but Ref. 5054-0140-01S is the first to be released in full ceramic. While its gradient blue dial with a sunburst finish echoes that of a 2022 red gold model, we think it looks that much cooler when combined with the 43.6mm case and bracelet in black ceramic, framed by a matching ceramic bezel insert with grey Liquidmetal numerals and indexes. The watch has a 300m water resistance and its self-winding Calibre 6654.P4  has 72 hours of autonomy, powering the timepiece, including its complete calendar and moonphase displays. Visible from a sapphire crystal caseback, the self-winding movement features a secure mechanism that allows adjustments to the calendar indications at any time of the day without damaging it.

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet Phases de Lune in black ceramic also comes with a green (Ref. 5054-0153-01S) or black dial (Ref. 5054-0130-01S).

Also available with a green (Ref. 5054-0153-01S) or black dial (Ref. 5054-0130-01S), the latest Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet Phases de Lune comes with additional NATO or sail-canvas strap options. However, the blue dial with ceramic bracelet version is the one to go for, in our opinion. In addition, those who are hoping that the new bracelet will be applied to other models of the Bathyscaphe will undoubtedly be delighted to learn that Blancpain has done just that with the black-dialled time-and-date Ref. 5000-0130-01S and the Chronographe Flyback with a green (Ref. 5200-0153-01S) or black dial (5200-0130-01S), all in black ceramic. Seeing how the bracelet elevates the looks of these watches, we can’t wait to see where it is going to pop up next in Blancpain’s stable.
