Possibly A. Lange & Söhne’s richest and most varied collection, the Saxonia has served as an expansive canvas of ideas and styles for the German brand, with models that range from the stupendously simple two-hand Saxonia Thin, to the eruditely complex Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon.

This time, however, Lange has decided to boost the collection instead with pleasing aesthetic tweaks that stretch the repertoire ever so slightly, as it looks to broaden its selection with fresh, but fail-safe options.

Certainly, the new Saxonia Thin in white gold with a shimmering black dial that evokes a starry midnight sky is very easy to like. Limited to 50 pieces, the watch’s sparkly allure comes courtesy of a solid silver dial that is coated with black gold flux filled with tiny copper coloured particles.

Fans of the Saxonia Thin will remember a similar version with shimmering blue dial, made using the same method, from 2018. While the earlier model exudes a touch of flamboyance, this year’s version is more restrained – though no less glamourous – in its black-and-white combination. And as the name promises, the Saxonia Thin will slide under your cuff with ease, housing a hand-wound movement that is only just 2.9mm in height – Lange’s thinnest calibre ever.

The Saxonia Outsize Date, recognised by its harmonious symmetry anchored by the brand’s famous large twin-date display at 12 o’clock, also welcomes new variants. Up till now, the Saxonia Outsize Date line-up comprises only two models – one in white gold and another in pink gold, both with black dials. The new additions, also encased in white and pink gold, offer delightful contrast with argenté coloured dials.

Both black and argenté coloured dial options are equally distinguished dress watch options. Though not quite as showy compared to the Saxonia Thin, the extra dial options choices for the Saxonia Outsize Date will give even the most conservative buyers of dress watches something to think about.
