Tudor Heritage Black Bay Steel: Malaysia Price And Review

The devil is in the details.

To commemorate 60 years of creating dive watches, Tudor marches out a full-steel version of its popular Heritage Black Bay.

Launched at Baselworld 2017, the Heritage Black Bay Steel also gets a date window (a first for the collection) at three o’clock—a much welcome practical feature. While purists might vote in favour of keeping the dial clean to recall the vintage models, we’re pretty happy with this addition and we’re sure there are likeminded aficionados too.

It has to be said Tudor is not trying to reinvent the Black Bay collection. Rather, the small tweaks only serve to enhance its already very impressive virtues. The watch maintains its classic 41mm stainless steel Black Bay case and familiar matte black domed dial with dot and dagger lume plots, as well as the shield logo above the signature. Minute details such as the raised, domed sapphire crystal add a retro aesthetic.

The watch is powered by the in-house automatic calibre MT5612, which is COSC-certified. Also found in the 2015 Pelagos models, this fully in-house movement manufactured by Tudor provides a 70-hour power reserve, meaning you can take off the watch on a Friday evening and put it back on again Monday morning without having to reset and wind it.

Perhaps the most winsome feature is the steel riveted bracelet inspired by the folding riveted bracelets of vintage Tudor watches from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Famous for the visible rivets (above) that attach the links on the side of the bracelet, the distinctive stepped construction of this steel bracelet gives a slightly rugged appeal. Not a fan of the bracelet? The watch is also available in an aged black leather strap with folding clasp. Both options come with an additional khaki green fabric strap (below) made using the traditional Jacquard technique.

On the whole, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Steel is a great looking watch with top-notch quality and doesn’t break your bank. Versatile in its use and respectable in its heritage, this timepiece is not one you’d keep nestled at home only to be taken out once in awhile, but rather a companion you can wear daily.
