TAG Heuer goes full speed ahead with its latest collab.

TAG Heuer F1 Gulf Oil Special Edition

In 1968, glory came to American carmaker, Ford, as the GT40 won its first ever victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. This was a significant event as the Ford GT40 came into existence due to Henry Ford II’s grudge against Ferrari over a business dispute which left him ordering his racing division to come up with a car that could beat the Ferrari when it came to endurance racing. Thus, the GT40 was born and the rest is history.

Now 50 years later, TAG Heuer, a partner of Gulf, is looking back to this famous race with the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Gulf Special Edition, plus a special 50-piece limited engraved edition of the Monaco Gulf (but that’s for another day). Sharing a long and rich history in the world of motorsports together, the launch of this special watch collection marks a unique chapter in their relationship.

The watch sports the iconic orange and blue livery of the original GT40 that won the 1968 race with the sunray-finished dial featuring two vertical stripes in light blue and orange against a brilliant navy background, an apt nod to the Gulf logo. This is encased in a 43mm steel case with a notched steel bezel and aluminium ring with tachymeter scale. The steel crown is flanked by the chronograph pushers at the two o’clock and four o’clock with black PVD coating.

Flip it over and you’ll see the Gulf logo engraved on the caseback. Inside the watch is a pretty straightforward Swiss quartz chronograph movement that powers the hours, minutes, small seconds at three o’clock, date in between four and five o’clock, and chronograph function that’s accurate to one tenth of a second at six o’clock. Finishing things up, the watch is paired nicely with a blue leather strap that sports orange stitching for a stylishly sporty look.

At the heart of it, the watch reflects the true spirit of a racecar, flashy and sleek. The bright colours don’t make it look cheap but instead it stands out on your wrist nicely. While it may not be a watch for those who prefer something more discreet, those who are in the market for a pretty cool motor-inspired timepiece should really keep the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Gulf Special Edition on their radar.
