TAG Heuer powers up its second Connected Watch.

Looks like TAG Heuer has done it again, mounting yet another very credible charge on the smartwatch market with its latest Connected Modular 45.

It was just two years ago when TAG Heuer first announced its collaboration with two tech-giants, Google and Intel, as it prepared to enter the burgeoning smartwatch fray – and swiftly followed that up with its first offering, the TAG Heuer Connected.

But before we could catch our breath, the brand, in true tech-inspired fashion, drops the new Connected Modular 45 barely a year later, debunking the notion of Swiss watchmaking industry’s passive response to embracing change.

Ok, so TAG Heuer is quick on the draw. But is the watch any good?

Both the Connected Modular Watch 45 and its predecessor share several software and hardware similarities, such as Google’s Android Wear powering both versions (version 2.0 is made compatible for iPhone users), with a 4GB of storage and 512MB RAM. The processor, connectivity and app offerings are also similar, including a custom Intel Atom Z34XX chip complemented by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS capabilities, and multiple dial interface, NFC chip for contactless payments, amongst others.

The biggest difference, though, as the new model’s name suggests, its ‘modular’ feature. With the Connected Modular Watch 45, owners are able to customise the watch according to their whims and fancies.

And no, we aren’t just talking about a token change of strap colours. The watch’s comes with extensive interchangeable components. This essentially means that you can choose from a dazzling array of colours, finishings and materials for the case, lugs, strap and buckle. There are 11 standard options offered in stores, with 45 more combinations are available on request, leaving you absolutely spoiled for choice.

But that’s not all. The Connected Modular 45 digital timepiece is interchangeable for a mechanical one. So if you have had enough of all that tapping and swiping, you can opt to replace the connected module with another housing a three-hand Calibre 5 automatic movement. Or, if you’re feeling a little indulgent, swap with a complication module featuring TAG Heuer’s in-house, COSC-certified chronograph tourbillion movement (below).
