REC P-51: Malaysia Price And ReviewWritten by Sim Wie Boon
A must-have for Mustang lovers.
There is something inherently masculine and stylish about a 1960s Ford Mustang. Its raw power and sleek build has toured American roads through the years. In an effort to reflect the iconic spirit of the Mustang, Danish watch company REC has crafted an ingeniously unique watch that pays tribute to the car in a very special way.
True to its motto "Recover, Recycle, Reclaim,” REC has always injected a classic automotive flair to their watches by repurposing old icons such as vintage Mini Coopers (The Coopers and Mark 1) and Porsche 911s (The 901s). After salvaging a number of wrecked vintage Mustangs with the help of the Mustang Clubs of America and Denmark, REC’s latest offering sees the metal from the body panels of those cars being crafted into their new P-51 watches.
The use of original vintage car panels lends the watch a unique distressed look, complete with scratches and blemishes. All the dials of the REC P-51 are one-of-a-kind and feature a little plaque in the top left with the car’s model name and year of manufacture.
Heavily inspired by the original Mustang’s dashboard, the sub-dials incorporate the car’s speedometer into its design, as seen in the small top dial that indicates the power reserve and the bottom sub-dial for time and date. We especially love how the power reserve dial looks like a fuel gauge. The orange hands also add a nice pop of colour to the dial, making this watch feel very authentic and not at all gimmicky.
By now you would have realised this watch is all about the details. Featuring the Mustang’s evocative shape, the case comes in several renditions, including a stainless steel case with a black PVD finish and steel or black PVD bezel, and a black PVD case with a rose gold-plated bezel. The screw-down crown sits off-centre and features REC’s shield-and-gears emblem. Smooth and sleek with a minimalist polished feel, it offers a good grip especially while unscrewing.
Inside the watch is the automatic Miyota 9130 movement. A competent and attractive calibre that beats at 28,800vph, the 9130 provides a very smooth sweep seconds hand, making the dial feel like a real speedometer whilst providing dead-on accuracy.
Every now and then, a watch brand tries to do something different but they don’t always work. For REC’s case, its motto leads it to produce cool watches that will grace the wrists of proper enthusiasts. If you’re a classic car lover, you definitely should be looking this way.
