Omega Speedmaster ‘Speedy Tuesday’ Limited Edition: Singapore and Malaysia Prices, and Review

Meet Omega’s latest sold-out internet sensation: the Speedmaster ‘Speedy Tuesday’ Limited Edition.

Since the birth of the #SpeedyTuesday hashtag five years ago, the online community has revelled in posting wrist shots of their Omega Speedmasters every Tuesday, generating a large following of fans of the iconic collection. It was only fitting then, that Omega decided to drop their latest limited edition Speedmaster for sale online—a first for the 114-year-old brand.

One of Omega’s most coveted models, the Speedmaster found fame as the legendary ‘Moonwatch’ when astronaut Buzz Aldrin wore it on the moon after Neil Armstrong left his timepiece in the Lunar Module as a backup. Read more about it here and here. Although various other iterations have been created for the Speedmaster, including the Racing and Mark II lines, the ‘Moonwatch’ remains the quintessential model. And like it, the new ‘Speedy Tuesday’ has space connections.

Inspired by the 1978 Omega Speedmaster ‘Alaska Project III’ model created for NASA, the ‘Speedy Tuesday’ bears traits of the original with its anti-reflective, readable features. In another vintage touch that references the ‘Alaska Project III’ model, large radial numbers are featured on the three sub-dials.

Meantime, the ‘Speedy Tuesday’ features a ‘Reverse Panda’ dial that recalls a model from 1966 —white opaline silvery sub-dials against a jet black dial with bezel and tachymetre in matte black aluminium – complete with a vintage Omega logo at ‘12’.

What is really cool, too, is the watch’s luminescence, especially on the chrono sub-dials that are marked by thin concentric markings that add depth to its look. And like other classic Speedys, the dial is protected with a domed hesalite crystal and framed by a tachymeter scale.

Engine-wise, the timepiece is powered by the hand-wound calibre 1861, similar to the movement found in the original Moonwatch – but with upgraded rhodium-plated finish. The caseback is engraved with the model’s name and limited edition number.

Other special commemorative extras to look out for include a leather watch roll that comes with a strap-changing tool and extra NATO strap engraved with #SpeedyTuesday on the loop.

Most importantly for collectors, production is capped at 2012 pieces, referencing the year of birth of the #SpeedyTuesday hashtag. At press time, all have already been snapped up. The ‘please try again later’ message is heartbreaking, but recommended advice – offering hope, when all else fails.

Like most people these days, Melissa tells the time with her phone. She considers serious timepieces works of art and thinks the perpetual calendar is the handiest complication to date (pun not intended). She's also a Grammar Nazi but promises not to judge if you can't tell the difference between "guilloche" and "guillotine".
