IWC goes back to the basics.

IWC Da Vinci Automatic
After going back and forth from round to tonneau-shaped cases, featuring everything from quartz movements to perpetual calendar complications, the Da Vinci collection this year harkens back to the days of the ‘90s Da Vinci SL Automatic (Ref. 3528) with its minimalist dial, large Arabic figures and lancet-shaped hands. Perfect for both men and women, the watch comes in two versions, one with a silver-plated dial and black Santoni leather strap (Ref. IW356601), while the other comes with a slate-coloured dial and stainless-steel bracelet (Ref. IW356602).

IWC Da Vinci Automatic
For some, the Da Vinci Automatic might be a tad too simple but for others, the fuss-free dial with a time-only layout and clear-cut date window at six o’clock is sophisticated and chic with a tinge of vintage appeal thrown into the mix. On the Ref. IW356602 (above), the slate sunburst finish offers an illuminating tone that shines in shades of blue and purple while the Ref. IW356601 features a silver-plated dial with gold-plated hour and minute hands and appliqués. A blue seconds hand brings out a brilliant and colourful contrast to the overall look of the watch.

Featuring a steel case, movable horns and twin-frame bezel enclosed by a peripheral groove, the Da Vinci Automatic makes for a dressy timepiece that can easily be worn for casual occasions as well. The 40mm diameter and 10mm thickness offers a proportion that’s appealing to enthusiasts of both genders without sacrificing form or function.

Driving the watch is the Calibre 35111, which is as fuss-free as the timekeeper’s aesthetics, making it an extremely complementary movement. Similar to the ones that power IWC’s basic Portofino watches and 36mm Pilot’s; the Calibre 35111 is a modified Selita SW300-1 that many have noted to be robust and reliable.

Once again, we’re left with one of the biggest conundrum we see on many of the watches today. This is a timepiece that you’ll either love or hate. Its simplistic detailing and robust solid aesthetics makes it one of those watches that require you to take a second look to appreciate. It doesn’t steal attention but once captured, you can hardly look away. We love its unisex appeal and classy elegance that effortlessly reflects IWC’s qualities and principles.
