Oris honours the late Carl Brashear once more.

Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition

About three years ago, Oris decided to honour a very special person, the late Carl Brashear, a US Navy diver who broke the colour barrier by being the first African-American to attend and graduate from the Diving & Salvage School in New Jersey, becoming the first African-American US Navy Diver.

Despite a horrific injury and subsequent amputation, Brashear would rise above his circumstances to become a US Navy Master Diver. In 2016, Oris chose to pay tribute to him with a sleek three-hand timepiece based on the very popular Oris Sixty-Five. Fully encased in bronze, which was a first for the brand, all 2,000 pieces sold out in a flash.

This year, Oris is celebrating Brashear again with another limited-edition series, this time with a chronograph function. The Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition is again based on the Oris Divers Sixty-Five and sports a rather seductive dark blue dial that makes it feel like you’re deep in the depths of the sea.

For added legibility, the dial is decorated with appliqué ‘dot’ rose gold-plated markers and hands coated with Super-LumiNova. The chronograph seconds hand is located centrally while the right sub-dial displays a 30-minute totaliser and the left sub-dial at nine o’clock displaying the running seconds.

In terms of depth and texture, the charming bi-compax layout and royal blue dial wouldn’t have worked as well without the 43mm bronze case—a trendy material these days. What sets bronze apart is that it ages over time. Subject to atmospheric moisture and the pH levels in the wearer’s perspiration, each watch will take on a unique look over time. Powering the watch is the Oris Calibre 771, a special movement based on Sellita’s SW 510 and appears in the Oris collection for the first time. As a commemorative edition, the watch comes in its own presentation box.

At the end of the day, much like the brand itself, the Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition is a straightforward underdog-ish type of watch. Without denying its beauty, the watch is really simple to use, making it a great companion whether you’re a land-locked wearer or ocean enthusiast. The fact that you’ll end up with a one-of-a-kind piece after years of wearing it is a pretty temping proposition as well.
