Montblanc Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph

Montblanc’s Star Legacy may be only 20 years old this year, but it is safe to say that it is fully imbued with an old soul. The Swiss luxury marque is known to dig deep into its past as seeks to provide a firm foundation for its new creations, and this is fully demonstrated in the new Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph.

Heavily inspired by old Minerva pocket watches such as the 1927 Gold Hunter Calibre 19, the watch wears its old-world influences proudly. One can immediately recognise the throwback accents on elements such as the onion-shaped crown, leaf-shaped hands and railway minute track.

At slightly under RM18,000, the Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph is rather reasonably priced, especially when you consider how much Montblanc has packed into the watch. Reputable brand name aside, the watch is powered by a modified version of the industry-standard Valjoux 7753 chronograph movement, which is known for its reliability and robustness.

While it is a muscular performance on the inside, the outside of the Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph is all about classic refinement. A nicely polished 42mm stainless steel case frames a gorgeous silvery-white or slate-grey dial that brims with beautiful details.

The large Arabic numerals help evoke nostalgic pocket watch-style design, while the railway minute track runs around the periphery of the dial that’s outlined by a brilliant filet sauté guilloché finish. At six o’clock, the 12-hour totaliser features a beautiful inlay of the Montblanc star emblem. Last but not least, the watch is paired with a blue or grey Sfumato alligator leather strap made in Florence, Italy, which adds even more flair to the proceedings.

Some may argue that the Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph is a tad too hefty as a dress watch. But we reckon Montblanc more than address this in the design department, and – with the watch being a chronograph – strikes a nice balance between performance and panache.
