Cartier’s newly minted classic gets an upgrade.

Cartier Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat in stainless steel

Sometimes a simple update can make a world of difference. This is especially evident with Cartier’s latest Drive de Cartier, the Extra-Flat in stainless steel or yellow gold.

Unveiled earlier this month at SIHH 2018, the two new models are largely similar to their predecessors. But while the previous white and rose gold models were a hit, the new versions are pretty stunning too, maintaining the vintage undertones of the line with a sleek, masculine vibe.

The Drive de Cartier retains its cushion-shaped 39mm case and 6.6mm profile. This is thanks to the slim, hand-wound Calibre 430 MC, which measures just 2.1mm in height. Although it might seem quite thin, the watch doesn’t appear fragile and actually commands presence on the wrist.

Despite new case materials, the finishing is identical to the 2017 offerings, like the nicely polished curved bezel and lugs, and brushed sides and caseback. This balance offers just the right amount of shine on the watch for that classical look without going overboard.

Simplicity can be a good thing, as with the minimalist silver sunburst dial featuring two subtle channels flanking the minute markers. In addition, the blue steel sword-shaped hands offer a nice contrast to both the steel and yellow gold cases.

For sartorial pairings, the steel version comes with a cool blue alligator leather strap while the yellow gold version (above) is styled with an muted grey alligator leather strap.

The Drive de Cartier has been one of our favourites ever since its debut in 2016. A vintage-inspired watch with automotive undertones, the collection has grown from a simple time-date to a family of moonphases, travel-times, and even tourbillons. As much as it's an incredibly versatile piece for everyday wear, it’s exciting to see where the trajectory of this collection is headed.
