Bulgari unveils a sharp all-rounder.

Bulgari Octo Roma Ref 102856

It doesn’t take much for one to notice that Bulgari’s Octo collection bears the touch of Gerald Genta, a watch design maverick who was responsible for some of the most iconic watches from the 20th century. His legacy lives on in Bulgari with the Octo, first introduced in 2012 where the octagonal shape of the watch with over 110 facets made it an instant hit throughout the world and earned the accolades of many.

While many lauded its unusual and modernist design, the watch had its fair share of detractors who didn’t like its size and sharp corners. But Bulgari persevered and last year the Octo Roma was born. A clever design on the part of the jeweller looking to appease naysayers, the Octo Roma combines more than a century of facets with the circular influences of its Roma collection, resulting in what seems like a completely new watch, yet still retaining the DNA of the angular Octo.

Instead of the Octo’s 115 facets, the Octo Roma pares it down to 58 facets with the sharp edges chamfered down to rounded corners. The combination of squarish angles with smooth roundness creates a strong but friendly feel to the watch. The case has also been reduced to 41mm and the lugs are now closer together to accommodate a narrower strap for those with slimmer wrists.

Driving the Octo Roma is the Calibre BVL Solotempo, an automatic mechanical movement that now features some ceramic touches to improve its durability. Beating at 28,800vph for excellent precision, this engine boasts up to 42 hours of power reserve, with a Côtes de Genève finishing is shown through the watch’s transparent caseback. This movement is enshrined in a very sleek looking stainless steel case with matching bracelet or strap.

If you’re in the market for a versatile dress piece that sits quite comfortably with both a suit or casual wear, the Octo Roma should definitely be on your list. The combination of the watch’s steel hues, blue dial and hand applied indexes match well to the unique angles of the watch, making for a truly versatile timepiece.
